Artistic Statement

I love to write. Most of my friends and colleagues in the Chicago Theatre Community know me primarily as a director, and secondly, I suppose as an actor or a teacher. I think that is one of my great values as an emerging writer - having fully immersed myself in those disciplines for several years allows me to understand the needs of a play beyond words/language.

As well, I pride myself on being extremely well-read when it comes to the literature of the theatre. Not just the plays themselves but theory and history as well. I think that these are all strengths that I display. But what I really believe I have is a vision in my head for what I want theatre to be, as well as what I don’t want it to be.

What I don’t want it to be: Kitchen-sink drama, live television episodes, soap opera, anything that talks down to or lectures an audience. Theatre (or plays) that claim to have all the answers.

What I do want it to be: Poetic, magical, disturbing, funny, work that asks the questions and lets the audience answer it for themselves, work that respects the audience’s imagination, musical language. rhythmic, visuals that speak for themselves.
