Artistic Statement
I believe in the good of people, but I also understand we live in an easily corrupted world. They say our choices define us, but sometimes we are not given a choice. We are given a circumstance and many of my stories are about people caught up in a life they never planned after losing something, or someone, to circumstances beyond their control. At my core, no matter what the backdrop (be it fracking, pathogens, monsters, stepping through the mirror, or the plight of outlaws in 12th century England) I write about families—sisters, fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, best friends, brothers—and how loss can pull them together or tear them apart. In the process, my aim is to give my audiences a lens through which they can examine the circumstances in their own lives and find ways to gain back a piece of that which they've lost without compromising who they are in the process.
