I want to create theater that infuriates people because there are no right answers. I want people to leave my shows mad because I didn’t tell them what to think or give them one clear character to root for. That, to me, is the essence of theater. Creating a nebulous space where we are all free to admit that we’re human and we’re all just figuring it out day by day and minute by minute. If I can create pieces that do this successfully, I believe I have a chance to force someone to think outside their box - not because I told them to, but because I presented them with the opportunity to take that step.
My work as a writer is all about finding a way forward, even if that way might take eight different forms in a single piece. I don’t believe you can force someone to examine the world or themselves, but if you meet them halfway in a dark room with fictional people they can pretend don’t mirror reality, you can usually coax them into a new corner of the unknown.
Additionally, I believe in writing for the medium. That sounds very vague to say, but I think it’s crucial to write plays with a constant awareness of the audience. There’s so much to take advantage of when you have that direct access between art and audience and I believe it makes my work stronger when I can focus not just on the visual, but on the visceral. What are the smells? The sounds? What are things that make people turn away? What are things that make them unable to look away? How far can you push that car crash?
It is my hope that through my work, people will gain more open perspectives on how people make the hard decisions.
