Artistic Statement

I write plays and musicals with fantastical elements that aspire to leave audiences with a better understanding of the current world in which they live. I strive to write musicals that work on a level of comedy and drama that speaks to audiences at a relatable emotional and socially relevant level. My current projects fit into this vision and have helped me shape my views on how I write my plays and musicals.
One of my main influences for is how I am fascinated by the fantastic. From my full-length musical set after the last ice age that involves a socially awkward mammoth to my other project set inside a tabletop RPG campaign, I believe that audiences should engage with fantastical environments in order to help better understand the current world we live in. Though my worlds and characters may seem distant at first glance, I seek to write them all with a relatable and creative edge that builds connections with the immediate audience. I explore the relationship between family (the one your born to and the one you choose), parents and children, the bonds of siblings, ill-fated love stories, and life and death confrontations which make my writing style engaging.

Through my work as a writer I also employ techniques that are prevalent across our work in order to develop our fantastical worlds. This includes the use of elements like non-naturalistic language and puppetry. I believe using non-naturalistic language helps facilitate the fantastical worlds and to do this I employ things such as perfect rhyme in my lyrics for musicals and inventive language choices as well. I feel, as with most of my current projects, that elements like puppetry should be employed to develop the environment, story, and characters. Through all of these elements and more I strive to build strong shows with engaging and accessible storytelling.
