Artistic Statement

My work unapologetically pushes the boundaries of storytelling, finding a universal humanity in the
weird, the extraordinary, and the supernatural. Audiences are left to examine the depth of the human
psyche and the ideas on which we base our human interactions. I am a Horror Unicorn, and I often
work within two opposite sides of humanity - horror and comedy - which I believe benefit each other.
My plays are fresh and nuanced, a blend of present-day vernacular and postmodern
structure that follows the rules of Aristotle's unities; but isn’t afraid to defy them. To create immediacy, often my work is in real-time, in one setting. As humans, we innately seek catharsis. I believe we go to live theatre for the Spectacle - with a capital “S”. I love to create a visceral experience with my plays, where elements like blood, emboldened sexuality, and live music are used to engage the audience in a dynamic way. I am known for my skill in world building. My vision can be large or intimate,
depending on the topic, both have impact. I want artists to feel challenged and fulfilled when working
on a Nordland production, doing things they haven’t done before on stage. Characters that are meaty
and fun and weird, especially for women. I love the research process of creation, when taking on a new
topic, I gather all the information I can find and allow that to inspire my storytelling.
