Artistic Statement

As a bonafide daughter of the South, I grew up steeped in extremism and, as a result, have been forced to reevaluate and evolve a good deal over the course of my life. The journey to leave closed-off and dangerous worldviews for more expansive and inclusive ones will be lifelong, and it appears in much of my work. I love to incorporate themes of time, shame, and redemption to show the many ways we attempt to connect our present selves to our past selves. This includes how institutions and relationships can be corrupted when we remember our pasts incorrectly or don't fully confront the truth about who we are and how we got here. How we remember our pasts deeply impacts our power in the present; and theatre, for me, is an opportunity to unpack how we've arrived where we are. Fortunately, it also offers collaboration and demands intentionality, so by the end of the process, hopefully we can all see the world with clearer, more empathetic eyes.
