Artistic Statement
I come late to playwriting. I went to film school to become a cinema artist, but my experience in Hollywood as a screenwriter soured me on being a creative person in the studio system. I drifted into game show and radio sports writing before leaving show business to work in the non-profit sector. In 2008, I gave playwriting a try and it was a revelation - I found my voice and could finally write freely and passionately. In the theater, I can explore the private emotions, public issues and provocative ideas that I am obsessed with at any given time. I wrote my first full-length play, a drama called THE LOST TRIBE (now titled SURVIVORS), as a way to deal with the long-simmering contradictions within myself as an assimilated American Jew in the post-Holocaust world. My second full-length, a comedy called THE TRIALS OF MOLLY GREENBERG, addressed the changing nature of family in the 21st century and touched on the issue of gay marriage. UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT, my third play, is a two-character drama that explores the ambiguities inherent in a date rape allegation. My fourth full-length, a comedy (of sorts) called STORAGE LOCKER, looks at the now-well-publicized-via-reality-tv phenomenon of buying abandoned storage lockers and filters it through an absurdist prism. PARALYZED, my latest full=length play, is a serious comedy that examines the struggles of wheelchair-bound actor. I have also written 14 short plays that mine a darkly comedic vein in my personality. Writing plays allows me to go to places in my mind and heart that excite and terrify me.
