Artistic Statement

My writing celebrates our common humanity through humor. I focus on family and workplace relationships and struggles, and skewer hypocrisy reflected in social issues that I find compelling. Writing leads me to gain a more nuanced understanding of the human condition. I aim to make an audience laugh even uncomfortably in order to appreciate the power of honesty and forming genuine human connections. My stories honor the resiliency of people despite societal challenges in pursuing happiness and success.
I am a core member of the advanced writing workshops led by Will Dunne, an award-winning and Eugene O’Neill Center honored playwright. Will has generously said of my writing: “Susan Rabin populates her comedies with memorable characters who not only make us laugh, but also challenge our vision of the world and what it means to be human.”
-- Will Dunne, May 2, 2017.

In order to bring my plays to audiences, I formed a non-profit production company– Windy City Productions® The Company name reflects the affection I have for my Chicago roots. My characters are often drawn from family and friends who embody a midwestern temperament and vitality and unpretentiousness, openness, and directness.
