My work is anchored in a deeply held belief that comedy can be challenging, multi-faceted, and gut-wrenching in addition to being entertaining. I love "gutpunch comedies" that are sometimes set in silly, absurd worlds but speak directly to human pain. When we go to the theatre, it's our inner child that wants to be told a story, but sometimes it's our broken adult selves that need to take something home from it.
So, I explore issues of identity/the self, mental illness, and grief but almost always within a heightened or magical reality. Thematically, I'm inspired by late romanticism, visual art from ancient to contemporary, and modern and post-modern philosophy. However, because these sources can be unappealing or alienating to many people, I aim to invite the audience in by employing farce, absurdism, and often puppetry.
I hope the create a space where important conversations can be had in all their bloody glory without adding to the weight that so many of us carry around.
