I often say that I didn’t choose writing, writing chose me. Since I was a young child, my imagination overflowed with characters. I don’t invite them over, they show up unannounced and get very annoyed when I don’t tell their stories. In fact, I wrote my first play in the sixth grade. This was long before I ever had the opportunity to see a show in an actual theater. I unfortunately had to step away from writing for a while, including several years working as a paralegal and later as a middle school teacher. After a particularly trying bout of depression, I found solace, and then myself, in the written word. I have since dedicated myself to storytelling.
I firmly believe that art is activism. My varied life experiences have provided me with a unique opportunity to explore a variety of social issues in my work, particularly those surrounding class, gender, and mental health. I hope my projects will not only entertain audiences but will spark much-needed conversation. I especially enjoy exploring issues through a comedic lens. This past year has brought dark times to many people and I believe that now, more than ever, the world could use some hope an d laughter.
