As a young child I watched intently as my family told epics through corridos. In-between songs my mom would whisper things like, “Mira mijo, se escribió de tu bisabuelo en esta canción.” I would then hear stories of loss, grief, passion, love, and frustration of people I felt I knew somehow. Their words were clear, their expression poetic, and their performance relatable. I began to appreciate singers like my mother who could take the words and transform them into a perfectly sung monologue by catering the interpretation to the audience, the space, and her own journey leading-up to that moment. Soon everything felt like a corrido. I would love to sit and observe quietly as they unfolded in front of me naturally over a kitchen table. Only now, it was the difference between a glance and a look.
The evolution of my understanding of storytelling brought me to theatre because it was a medium that allowed for flexibility in how I chose to express myself. Because of theatre I found le clown neveux. Clowning has become foundational in my philosophies and approaches to creation because it allows me how to identify what brings joy--and I have found joy within the harmony of choral cadences, the poetry of physicality, and the 'pleasure to be'.
Currently, my art and existential pondering focuses on the simple notion, 'we too, are conscious' because it uplifts that every single one of us is worthy of love, joy, or comfort -- even if consciousness is not what we expect. My current and ongoing goal is to curate a network of multifaceted, producing creators that can work independently and collaboratively to dismantle the systemic forces that burden marginalized persons.
