Artistic Statement
I’m not sure that I have an artistic statement that I can boil down into “words.” That’s what my plays do for me. Writing plays is the way I connect with the world and follow ideas to their logical conclusion—maybe logic’s not the best word to use. Let’s say “inevitable” instead. For me, every play I write is a way to find out something about who or what I am and about the world I see around me—to find out if words can really ever get at what they are trying to say. That’s a paraphrase of a line from As I Lay Dying, and if anyone ever knew the terror and glory of words, it was Faulkner. This sounds way too serious. Actually, I have a great deal of fun with words and with my plays. Maybe that’s one reason why I will never stop
