In my experience, life is full of little joys dispersed amongst unspeakable horrors. The joy makes the horrors easier to deal with, but sometimes we need a little something extra to cope. There are plenty of ways to do this: alcohol, gambling, weird kinks, etc. I prefer to write plays.

I like my theatre larger than life, but not necessarily on a large scale. My flair for the dramatic seeps into most things I do. As such, even my most grounded work is rooted in and driven by big feelings. I've never been nonchalant in my life, and that is certainly reflected in my tastes. I am also generally unconcerned with the rules of reality. We're playing make-believe here, it's more fun if we let our imaginations run a bit wild.

If I were to name the strongest thread connecting my work, I’d say it’s my various attempts to cope with The Horrors — that, and gay people. I write for catharsis, both my own and the audience’s. For anyone who’s ever been heartbroken, for those suffering from loss, and for those who find it all so absurd that all they can do is laugh. I write for angry queers trying to make space for themselves while their hearts call a hostile environment “home.” For people doing their best. I even, occasionally, write for those who just need to imagine a better world for a bit. Or a worse one, if that makes you feel better. Whatever helps you get through the day.
