George Devine said 'you choose your theatre like you choose your religion.' So perhaps I'm a Quaker, because my plays are always changing shape, and try to go deep within as a way of understanding the world.

But there are jokes, too. Booze, sex, Bowie, Queen. New York, Philly, LA, Chicago, London... am I a wandering mystic? A devil?

Or am I just terrible at these things?

George wanted 'hard-hitting, uncompromising plays about the problems and possibilities of our time.' That's a good job description, and it's all I ever try for. Sometimes I get close, but I hope I get closer.
