Artistic Statement
I am: -a childhood cancer survivor
-an actor
-a teacher
-a queer theater creator
-a native Texan
-a dancer
-a writer
-a reader
-a devoted doggy daddy
-a husband
-a learner.
I create theater for young people: to honor their truths, to challenge their thinking, to shed light on their struggles, to give voice to those whose voices are often silenced, to inspire activism and change, to connect them to the world and community around them, to spark their curiosity, and bring joy and laughter to their world. I teach students from age four through eighteen. My students inspire my work, challenge my assumptions and keep me connected to my inner child.
I believe in the power of interactive theater in education plays to use theater as a tool to help teach students in core curriculum. Theater has an incredible power to help students engage with the world around them. Collaboration with other theater artists and with the young audiences is crucial to my script development.
Young actors deserve high quality scripts to help them showcase their acting skills and give them moments to shine. Young actors need more scripts that explore important issues from their perspective. An important part of my job as a playwright is to take the ideas and creativity of my students and shape them into a strong piece of theater that highlights their viewpoint.
I know theater can be transformative.
