Thomas Underdal

Thomas Underdal's (he/him) work spans the roles of writer, historian, and dramaturg centering on creative and generative new work methodologies with community and environmental justices developing pedagogies and dramaturgies for the current and future ecological realities. Thomas holds an MFA in Theatre for Youth and Community from Arizona State University (ASU). He is also the current Play Works Coordinator for AZ Thespians.

His work includes The Boy Who Planted Seeds (2025 Workshop Childplay, ASU Reading), Kingdom (2025 Childsplay Academy, 2023 ASU TheatreLab), fairy tale girls (2024 ASU Theatre Lab). Thomas also produced an Earth Day Celebration in 2023 featuring two new play premieres, The Isle of Beasts and The Girl and the Mountain.

A vibrant group of young people comes together to create a story about a boy, a garden, and a drought as a way to explore their feelings about power, the world around them, and the values embedded in the stories we hear. Through storytelling, they begin to question what deserves to be remembered and who gets to decide.

Eula, a curious young girl from a seafaring nation, has long been enchanted by the tales of the mysterious Isle of Beasts. When smoke suddenly rises from the island, her concern sparks a daring journey to discover the truth about the fire, the beasts, and whether the real danger lies with them or the humans she's known all her life.

Synopsis

A troupe of actors perform the show, “The Girl and the Mountain.” The show is about a determined young girl who wants to climb to the tallest peaks of the Rocky Mountains so that she can see the entire world just like her father once told her. With the help of some friendly animals, she traverses the mountain facing man and beast alike.
