The stories we tell shape who we are, individually and as a culture.
Stories that are untold, or less known, or lost to history, compel me to write. Stories about women (cis, trans, non-binary), queer people and people of color, who have lived / are living outside of, and often in opposition to, a limiting patriarchal narrative, inspire me to make theatre.
Stories of courageous souls who cross boundaries and break rules who have historically been silenced. We live outside the norm – because who we are, what we believe, how we experience and express our humanity – provokes the existing paradigm to reckon with our right to be here. And be heard.
We are writing the story of the future now.
Theatre is a powerful space for provocation and connection. I believe in the redemptive power of theatre to bring people together in a common story. When we are divided and disconnected and isolated, theatre opens a space for empathy and reconciliation. A space to come together and be reminded of our interconnectedness. Breathing together, suspending our disbelief, and moving through stories that activate our senses and sync our heartbeats, reminds us that we are not alone.
One of the things that excites me most about being a playwright is the opportunity to use all the languages of the stage to tell a story: words, music, sound, silence, light, shadow, gesture, movement, stillness.
Stylistically, my plays blend realism with magic realism, take Jungian plunges into dreams and fractured memories, and explore encounters between the physical and metaphysical worlds. I often use non-linear storytelling, to express how I experience time, and to make space for an audience to piece together the story and discover their own meaning.
