I was raised by science fiction and theater, even if they’re rarely caught in the same room. I believe that speculative worldbuilding is a perfect vehicle to distance, deconstruct, and dissect modern issues; through alienation, à la Brecht, we might uncover secrets otherwise obscured by the trappings of proximity and realism. Endlessly inspired by the works of writers like Ken Liu and Octavia E. Butler, I aspire to subvert traditional, white-dominated sci-fi genres by centering queer and BIPOC stories. Science fiction is so often a metaphorical criticism of oppression, imperialism, and rampant industrialism, and I believe I am a part of the movement that finally populates speculative worlds, especially those on the stage, with the global majority. Combining my literary history of science fiction with my deep theatrical lineage, I aspire to tell stories that are about trying our best to be good, the naïve yet powerful belief in hope, and the beautiful, haunting landscape of loneliness in a world overloaded with connection.
