Artistic Statement
As a relatively new playwright, I call on my 35+ years of theatrical experience as a director, music director and actor to inform my vision of writing plays. I believe a live dramatic event should inspire audiences to think, to allow them to enjoy an experience and see themselves in the characters onstage. I write for the audience. They are the primary ear, eye and mind I wish to reach.
I also bring a lifetime of experience as a son, father, husband and southerner, writing from my unique perspectives on life. I don't believe life is bleak, I feel it is open for human connection and experience if we have the courage to go out and explore. I want to write plays that show how people communicate with each other, share their experiences and grow as humans.
People love to tell stories. Anecdotes shared with co-workers around the coffee machine, treasured memories recalled between long-lost friends. Tales of childhood exploits around the dinner table. Heartfelt remembrances at a loved one’s memorial. The ability to tell meaningful, relevant and propitious stories create bonds between us that last for years, sometimes generations. I feel that the human to tell, and to be told stories is one of the strongest and most congenital traits we have, and theatre is one of the last shared artistic experiences we have to hear stories together. Helping to produce these stories onstage through drama is a dream I’ve shared my entire life as an actor, director and music director. Until recently, I never had the privilege of actually writing those stories. As of this writing, this adventure into this new aspect of live storytelling has produced four full-length plays, a complete stage adaptation of a beloved children’s book, and more than twenty shorter plays. I have been honored to see a handful of these produced on stage and on video, which allowed me to share my stories with a larger group of people.
I feel art is best shared, and even better when done in collaboration. No person is alone in the world, and communities exist out there that are eager to work with the person who is open to improving their own creations. Together we can make art that is memorable, transformative and healing. Whether through laughter, tears or other emotional catharsis, I take the responsibility and accept the privilege of helping to bring new expressions of humanity into the world.
