Artistic Statement
I like to write about queer theory, circular socio-economies, interconnected communities, intersectional identities, loving communication and close care for relationships being at the root of it all, and the human obligation to witness each other. My work depicts people in the regenerative yet costly act of reimagining systems and rebuilding, while still indulging in the clownish theatrical humor that shows up in even the darkest moments of life– whether you invite it in or not. I believe my work engages with people fighting to be supported by the world while simply trying to thrive as their truest selves. I see my role as a theater artist as someone who not only encourages the audience to ask questions about their responsibility to answer to community and to honor their innermost selves, but also as someone who opens the door to an imagination of what all of those things can look like in action– whether it be in small moments of tender recognition or in heavy lifts of revolutionary risks. I’ve had the pleasure of working as an actor for over 15 years on many profound pieces of theater, new and old, and I am immensely inclined to now incite and nurture these conversations myself as a playwright.
