My brain is a lovely big wrinkly place, and I discovered a couple years ago that I think in dialogues. Whenever figuring out a problem or anticipating 17 different solutions or even talking to myself (I’ll admit it!), I tend to have a conversation with myself instead of thinking in one singular stream of conscience. My plays mirror the happenings of my brain and the secret conversations that take place between its many inhabitants.
Spending much of my childhood divvied up between Spain/Catalonia, Germany, New Jersey, and New York, I engaged with many different cultures, languages, and lifestyles that made me the multilingual multi-hyphenate I am today. I’m a Hispanic, Catalan, queer, multilingual writer eager to tell cool stories with incredible people. I co-founded a production company (Lighthouse Ladies) that does just this, but I’ll get into that a little later. One thing about me is that I have never been one to find satisfaction on the beaten path. If there’s a question I encounter with an incomplete or unsatisfactory answer, I’ll write a new one. If there’s a question that hasn’t been answered, I’ll explore new possibilities and discover characters to guide the way. I’ve heard that writers must know the rules to break them, so after many years of following the rules, I grant myself the power to break every one day after day, in my own Vikki way (hey, that rhymed!). I wholly trust my audiences and love their multifaceted interpretations. Everything in my plays is correct if you believe it to be so.
I have a joke with some friends that I’ll let you in on. A mini little baby dream of mine is to one day have my plays spoken about and analyzed in classrooms of all shapes and sizes. I itch to hear the word “Wernerian” come into common speech, much like “Brechtian” for example. *Hold for laughter*. For something to be “Wernerian”, it needs to have some sort of animal, a monologue or two about random things that actually mean a whole lot and answer the many questions of the play, some silly but poignant fixations between friends, and a whole bunch more that some teachers will point out someday (if all goes well). Until then, I keep writing, sharing, collaborating, and spreading joy and thought to all the inhabitants in your brains. I work my ass off to open doors so I can then open doors for others. I look forward to meeting you (the collective you, that is) along the way :).
