As a playwright, the stories I’m drawn to are specific moments in the lives of ordinary people. The moments can be quiet, unassuming, typical, or extraordinary or unexpected. It’s the truth in these moments that I long to explore. I sometimes gravitate toward the teenage or young adult years, despite having left them behind long ago. I enjoy exploring genders that are not my own, sexual identities that are both familiar and foreign. Places. Occupations. The student in me loves learning about my unknowns, researching them, discussing them, exploring them, but in the end telling stories about these people, ordinary people.
I want to make you think, feel, and think again and feel some more. My favorite writings are the ones that bring me to tears, whatever the reason.
My works run the gamut. Short, full length, musical (with collaborators), drama, comedy. My characters feel and hurt and smile and struggle and love, like we all do. They are relatable. Familiar. What I want to do in my work is connect these moments, and these characters, with the audience. I want to connect in any way possible, positive or negative… as long as the feeling is there, then the connection is there.
