Nina Simone’s quote, “An artist's duty is to reflect the times” is a compass for my work at large. As a subject matter expert in the African American female experience, I have the responsibility of highlighting women of color, specifically African American women and their authentic stories of adversity and triumph. My body of work gives voice to the African American community and the misunderstood and oftentimes dysfunctional and problematic stereotypes. My hope is that I might help stimulate the world and empower it to embrace cultural diversity, equity and inclusion; question the social or political issues surrounding people of color; and ignite a community through awareness and change.
