Why do I write plays? I could say I do it to unearth the truth of things, to bring people together in a community of shared wonder, to present some entirely new and unexpected story and okay, I’m happy when those things happen. But the real motive is I like to provoke – laughter, tears, outrage, it’s all good. Sitting in an audience, incognito, attune to the little gasp of recognition, the shiver, the chuckle. It makes up for all the money I don’t make. I once had someone walk out on a play, muttering and stomping his feet and slamming the door as he left. Yes!!!
