Artistic Statement
I've spent my life in the arts; first as an actor and musician, then as a director and artist and finally, as a playwright. They have been wonderful journeys and I wouldn't trade them for the world. Now, in my later years, I can choose which of these paths to explore and when to do so. It's a real joy to have the solace of the arts at your fingertips.
After forty-five years of directing theatre, I know what a good play looks like. I know what good dialogue sounds like. And I know how to use the rule of threes. During the pandemic I was inspired to start writing. Now I can’t stop. In the past year and a half, I have written six full-length plays and several shorter one act or ten-minute plays. The inspiration comes from my knowledge of the human condition, which comes from teaching Interpersonal Communications at the college level for the past twenty years. It also comes from my deep desire to make an impact on the world…to make my audiences (both as director and playwright) feel something that they wouldn’t have felt sitting at home. I don’t intend to “teach” my audiences anything, rather, my intent is to have them learn through their own feelings as they watch the piece I lay before them. I’ve tried to write “fluff” but it just isn’t in me. There is a responsibility when you have a platform. My platform is the stage and I take it very seriously.
