Artistic Statement
As a theater artist, I am looking to tell the untold stories. I often look for opportunities to write about women, either in the present or historically. Other plays that I have written address motherhood, adoption, sexual abuse, disability and LGBTQ+ lives, both present and historical. Stories are sometimes untold because there are secrets involved, self-imposed or externally imposed. These, too, have worked their way into my scripts. My work has grown to confront more challenging topics, sometimes ones that I haven’t been ready to write about or that I never wanted to write about. My play about epilepsy was extremely personal and, through the course of writing it, changed my relationship with my epilepsy and myself.
Over time, my style has evolved from being reality based. I have started exploring a more psychological and surreal approach to my scripts that allows the audience a peek into the characters thoughts and emotions. I have become enamored of utilizing alternate time structure in my writing to demonstrate how characters are connected to their emotional past and future selves. I have realized that, no matter how hard we try, we are products of our past and our societal past. The examination of that is something that I am very interested in.
