Artistic Statement

My first word was goodbye. I was born restless, move often, and even during settled times, often have multiple places to stay or multiple projects to keep me occupied. Restlessness is both my struggle and my blessing. It encourages me to create, work, and plow ahead into change and uncertainty. I come from a long line of bookish, Appalachian artists. My family has always valued the power of language, and the power of the land. Though my writing has varied from historical fiction to magical realism, the one theme that connects them is the search for home, in both a physical and emotional sense.
