My role as a storyteller, poet, playwright, and director is to give a voice to the voiceless; to shed a light on the shadows; to exhume from the closets the ghosts of the past; to find a lost language for lived experiences; to ask questions; but mostly, to honor the women of my line, my female ancestors, by creating through language, a place for them, at the table, to tell their own stories. I see my creative work , as a poetic dramatic conversation examining the intersection of race and gender as it plays out on the landscape of the sexualized Black female body, and the impact of empire on that sexualized Black female body. This conversation takes place across time, space, liminality, and the collective unconscious.
