Artistic Statement

These are things I know to be true about my plays:

1. The language is zippy, frothy, funny, efficient, economical. People banter, not bicker. No one monologues unless they absolutely have to.

2. Everyone is the smartest person in the room, though intelligence comes in many packages.

3. No villains. Every character is the hero of their own story. Everyone is trying their best in challenging circumstances.

4. You will laugh out loud until you’re absolutely sure you’re in a comedy. Then you’ll be sucker punched in the feels. At the end, you’ll be patched up and sent off into the world feeling a little sentimental and a lot more hopeful.

5. Plays are not vegetables. If you want to be miserable, read a newspaper. My plays should charm, inspire, soothe, imagine. I want to create the world the way I wish it were, the way I wish people were. I want to inspire us to make that world manifest.

6. My sense of humor is weird. Some of my characters say fuck.

7. Every play I’ve ever written runs 86 minutes. I have the performance reports to prove it.
