Artistic Statement
As a playwright/storyteller, my work seeks to connect disconnected worlds, communities, and individuals. Theatre invites us to peer past the limits of our own experience, to authentically expand into the world of another, to question what is narrow inside us, and to give space for dual and dueling empathies. The work I create doesn’t seek to divide, but rather to explore how we might courageously connect across our selves.
My work intentionally juxtaposes disparate worlds, cultures, eras, orientations, points of view, and scientific theories to explore and expand points of connection. I believe theatre provides a shared space to wander from our home, while asking us to simultaneously carry our home into this new place. In this duality, we confront the unknown while holding the known. This powerful disruption arrests habitual patterns and biases, creating space for hearts to expand, minds to question, and dialogue to open to the urgent questions of our society, culture, and shared humanity.
