We currently live in a world where we are inundated with technology, and the lines between good and evil are increasingly blurred. Classic stories where Good triumphs over Evil and the Heroes and rewarded while the Villains are Punished are stories that aren't told much anymore. Female characters are portrayed as objects unable to save themselves, or “strong” to the point where the men in their lives are rendered obsolete. Male characters are given the same objectified and skewed treatment--either they use those around them as means to an end or they have no spine at all. The women I write have the ability to save themselves, and find their own voice; the men I write treat the women and everyone else around them with respect and kindness. The stories I tell are full of values I know still exist--chivalry, kindness, loyalty, love, acceptance and standing up for what you believe in, no matter your secular or religious beliefs; no matter your ethic, socioeconomic, gender or racial identity. As an artist, I tell stories that will promote these values and perhaps reach those who need to hear them the most.
Theatre can bring out thoughts, emotions and communication in ways few other things can. Plays contain powerful messages that can affect the audience for good or for evil. The stories that make it to the stage are ones that need to be told. But in order to be told, these stories have to be written. That is my goal as a playwright.
