Artistic Statement
I write because my brother used to kick me under the table at family dinner while I picked every fight in the book.
Unlike me, my brother has a way of keeping his cool, clapping people on the shoulder while he calls out their apathy and ignorance. He has a way of challenging people - family, strangers, and acquaintances - that leaves everyone laughing. A friend to everyone, he has a way of actually
changing minds and hearts.
Through practice or patience or meditation or mindfulness, I will never attain my brother’s level of chill in my daily life, but my writing strives to do just that, confronting audiences in the way that comes so naturally to him. I write whimsy and bits and love, and while everyone is (I hope)
laughing and (god, I hope) entertained, I aim to ask hard questions, open healing conversations, and challenge when challenge is necessary. I aim to confront in my brother’s inexplicable way that maybe, miraculously changes minds and hearts.
Or maybe I just write because we have a sibling rivalry, and I’m going to win.
