Artistic Statement
I have a memory of watching a dramatic movie that started serious and got more serious as it went and didn’t have a single moment of levity. Nothing to diffuse the tension, and I never let down my guard. I never engaged with the characters, and when the inevitable tragedy came, I was not invested.
Meanwhile … I have seen comedians reel in their audiences with humor, and the audiences willingly went with them as they recounted traumatic events or life-threatening medical diagnoses or the loss of family members or rejections endured when they came out of the closet.
Humor helps us go places that are vulnerable or dark or difficult.
I lean toward dark humor and looking at things from a different perspective. What if the villain ain't so bad? What if the hero isn't good at all? What if we flip a trope or stereotypes on its head? What if, what if, what if ... ?
