In this ensemble piece, adapted from Tillie Olsen's novella, Tell Me A Riddle, Eva and her husband, David, are longtime immigrants to the USA, escaped from Olshana, a place where Jewish people were hounded, imprisoned and worse. Set primarily in Eva's later years, the internal battle comes to light when David wants a life, finally, of retirement and socializing in Florida while Eva wants nothing more to do with society, Eva is searching for greater discoveries. The couples conflict growing over the years, involve their many grown children, all with their own families and opinions, all anting something of grandmother. But these are the external influences. The true story is how Eva's life has affected her and brought her to her search now. As pieces off her past arise in her thoughts and come to life on stage, we view moments of heartbreaking poignancy in the shame of her poverty, or in what she has viewed as a child. The constant conflict with her husband over-rides all as we realize she has always had a struggle to be heard n her marriage.a struggle to be true herself. As Eva gets sick, and all the family tries their cures for her comfort and state of mind, continually baffling them, she keeps battling to find her way back to her original ideals, to find all that's in her, that has made up who she is, in order to discover the true worth of a life; one based on one's original ideals, hopes and beliefs. The journey in this play is primarily an internal one, with lots of opportunity for creative work by the ensemble. It appears complicated, but the script breaks down all shifts, doubling of characters, etc, into smooth transitions.
