  • Emily Hageman: Timmy's Big Kiss

What could easily be a drawn out fantasy turns into something much more in "Timmy's Big Kiss." A powerful piece about consent and the importance of it, a serious look into the truth about gender roles all wrapped up in one hilarious, delicious package. The girls are funny and varied and learn about themselves throughout--and the male characters get a chance to shine in the spotlight. A piece that easily could have just been funny is so much more, but I expected as much with Weaver at the wheel. Funny, charming, sweet and sincere, Weaver hits a home run.

  • Emily Hageman: Her Own Devices

Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the ground. "Her Own Devices" is one of the most perfect plays that I've ever read. It's a fantastically interesting story to start--strange and theatrical and disturbing and beautiful. The characters are so real and so lovable in all their brokenness. Madeleine is the kind of character you never forget. To see this on stage would be an experience that I desperately want to have. Just an absolutely incredible show that MUST BE STAGED how has this not been staged. It needs to be seen and heard. Highly recommended.

  • Emily Hageman: RED BIKE

RED BIKE is a work of art. It is both an extended allegory and a play that rips so real that you can nearly taste it. It is poetry, but it is dialogue. It is absolutely fascinating and to see this staged would be breathtaking. This play needs to be staged MORE with inventive actors, directors, and designers and then people need to sit and watch it so they can learn and understand and feel and CHANGE. Svich is incredibly brave and her courage flings itself directly into the heart with each page. Highly, highly recommended.

  • Emily Hageman: Persephone

Beautiful and deep with a fascinating structure. O'Grady does a ton with a little and layers it up beautifully. The style of the play is delightful with Persephone serving as a somewhat impatient narrator eager to tell a story that the other characters--who are all mourning her--aren't quite yet ready to play. A beautiful play about grief--and how the dead recognize that the living need to keep living, even when the living want to die with the dead. This show would be beautiful to see in person and would be a delight for actors and designers.

  • Emily Hageman: The Final Debate

Bublitz is a master at finding the artery and severing it completely. This would be an absolutely wonderful and devastating piece for high school students to perform at a competition. There is humor--wonderful, believable, casual naturalism--and then, there is the turn where everything changes and the characters are stripped down to their most basic form. Devastating, beautiful, and heart-breaking. These are real kids and I love them--as will an audience. They hope that it will have meaning. I hope that Bublitz's play will have the meaning it deserves. Bublitz shouts--when will it be...

  • Emily Hageman: The Sealing of Ceil

Oh wow. FANTASTIC one act play, really does the form right. This show would be absolutely TERRIFYING to see and I am certain that it sticks with audiences for long after the performance. The chilling imagery, the slow realizations, the fascinating characters, the tiny vignette scenes... the whole thing is incredibly striking and not to mention satisfying. Ceil is a remarkable character and would be a great challenge for any actress. Produce this now, I need to see it staged near me. If you want to learn how to write a great one act, read this. Highly recommended.

  • Emily Hageman: A Very Modern Marriage

This play is a TON of fun. Jolly is an absolute comedy master. The verbal barbs and zingers are hilarious, but more than that, Jolly nails the physical comedy. The descriptions in the script were enough to make me laugh out loud multiple times, I can only imagine what it's like on stage. I was almost crying when the slapping made the music turn on (read the play so you can understand this). This play should be studied as a modern comedy classic. It's fast, it's funny, and it's heartfelt--and it only gets crazier by the page. Highly recommended.

  • Emily Hageman: WORLD CLASSIC

A beautiful picture of a family that is so real it hurts. Diaz-Marcano lets the story unfold quietly before the audience member and as the puzzle pieces click into place, everything starts to make sense. Every family has their secrets--every family has their disfunctions, and what I appreciate about "World Classic" is that at the end, the family is still a family. There is power in the bonds that they've formed and they are not so easily tossed away, no matter how much pain lies beneath the surface. Diaz-Marcano has written this play with humor, tenderness, and grace.

  • Emily Hageman: MODERN MIRACLE

Absolutely delightful little piece for the Christian crowds out there. It's genuinely funny with a sweet message--and Martin creates each character to be individually hilarious in their own way. I could not stop laughing at Lucas bellowing everything. There are so many fast jokes that you might have to read it--or see it--a few times before you catch them all! But what I appreciate is that the sincere message is there and it's displayed in a way that all ages can enjoy. And the Bible puns? Keep 'em coming. A very fun play that would be perfect for Christian schools!

  • Emily Hageman: I'm Very Online

I absolutely LOVED this play. This is a play that needs to be on stage RIGHT THIS MOMENT because it is SO IMPORTANT. A genuine thoughtful look at two deeply flawed characters--and the people that surround them. Ferber has humanized two people who do their best to hide their humanity online. Mark and Kate are so unbelievably real and lovable and frustrating and hateable, I feel like they are my friends now. The dialogue was PHENOMENAL and hilarious, the structure of it is fascinating and flawless, and I thought about it all day. Ferber is one to watch. Highly recommended.
