A sweeping historical epic based on the fraught relationship between artist Diego Rivera and Henry Ford and its intersection with the history of Detroit, labor movements, and worldwide revolution. It's rich but never dense, grounded in strong characters and relationships but theatrical and full of spectacle. We need more plays like this and voices like Andy Boyd's on the American stage.

A truly fresh adaptation of the myth of Persephone, but I think more importantly a deeply moving story about a young woman growing up and reconciling the oftentimes competing influences and loyalties of a broken home. Keenan-Zelt has a gift for grounded poeticism and complex characters. When I first read this I was astonished by her sense of rhythm and musicality, and the way her writing creates an expansive world with such intimacy.

Such a fun, magical, and deeply touching coming of age story about identity, fantasy, and video games. Grounded by a beautifully-rendered sibling relationship, a strong but unstable bond strained by their diverging approaches to dealing with their difficult reality.

A truly moving, magical piece. It deals with such weighty, mature themes with an irresistible charm and sense of wonder. Delicate, but not precious. Whimsical, but grounded. And funny! Its fantasy world feels intuitive and precise, while offering many possibilities for directors and designers.

A meditative, philosophical, space opera. It reminds me of 2001 or Solaris in its use of the genre to reflect back at, or probe the depths of humanity and spirituality.
  • September Gurls

A poignant, poetic, and heartfelt play about friendship, featuring two excellent parts for women. The language is rich and substantial, the staging minimal and flexible—it moves nimbly back and forth across time and space.
  • El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom

A superhero play about what it means to see yourself in a superhero? I can't think of a better time for this play. Barbot is a perceptive writer with a finely-tuned ear, and this play is a fine display of his signature voice. It's fun, smart, and truly touching—balancing human drama, fantasy, and comic book structure with great care, without ever losing a sense of wonder and play.
