Artistic Statement

Here's the thing: I want shake-up American Theatre in a real way. I feel like Latinx folks don't relate to theatre, because it is the most exclusive form of art in America. It's overwhelmingly told from a white lens. It's too expensive for everyday, working-class people (my people) to afford. It does a terrible job of connecting with people outside of academia, or those with wealth and privilege. Let's be honest with ourselves. It's not for Latinx people, so I'm trying to write theatre that is. I'm trying write plays that speak to those that American Theatre so often ignores. That's why I'm trying to write plays that are gonna make my crazy tías laugh their asses off! I ain't trying to write living room dramas. I ain't trying to talk for or about academics or professionals, especially white ones. If people on the street don't find my plays dope, then I ain't doing it right. I'm trying to democratize theatre; to have it actually reflect the people that populate this country. I don't come from money or privilege. I come from scrappy-ass Mexican immigrants who worked their asses off for what they got. I'm coming at you with that same fire! So, believe me when I say I'm gonna shake what you believe in, while making you laugh and cry in the process.
