Artistic Statement

My theater is about spiritual act of imaginative manifestation, attempting to realize the prismatic nature of a subject and story; then to define an interface to the sacred through story and spectacle. My plays are occupied by symbols given flesh, flesh turned into ideas, many bodies condensed into one and vice-versa. I treat their interiority and gender as metaphysical stews, a deliberate form of imagining. These characters struggle, collapse, lose their shape, only to put their hands into the stew and pull out something new to nourish and serve them.

To that end, I create and subsequently destroy a theatrical identity: building thickly imagined parallels to the physical world that shares the “material,” then the mystical with an audience. Once the mystical has been opened up, I subtract, making an audience aware of ephemera - metaphor, their breath, the space between them and others - as a legitimate piece of reality.
