  • Aly Kantor: Kill Them With Kindness

This short is wildly theatrical, laugh-out-loud funny, and almost absurd in its effective simplicity! I can only imagine how much fun the cast and director would have staging the "bits" that transform this quirky comedy into a cohesive whole! The final reversal is a well-earned button on the end of what I'm certain is a goofy, high-energy variety show about... tragedy?! Laughter may not be the best medicine for Brown, but this play sure made my day!

  • Aly Kantor: The Last Stalker (Ten Minute)

This short play is a masterclass in writing a character-driven ten-minute play. The characters' actions (particularly Jason's) so clearly betray them, making it the perfect story for a theatrical medium. What seems like a comedy quickly transforms into a tense, high-stakes, and deeply tragic drama with both passion and fear at the center. At the same time, it's amazing to take stock of how far we've come from the terrifying early days of the AIDS crisis. A really lovely, dynamic piece for two versatile actors.

  • Aly Kantor: Arm's Length Romance (A Duologue)

A John Busser play is always a treat! I'm not sure how he did it, but he made a play about two people sitting in chairs into a dynamic ride that leads to the end of a relationship. The rift is subtle but nuanced - and, as always, absolutely hilarious! The wordplay alone is the work of a master! It's goofy, it's theatrical, and it would be a treat for two in sync performers with a knack for timing! Best of all, you could produce this on a dime and get change back! Do it!

  • Aly Kantor: DRIVERLESS

I was delighted by this futuristic fantasia with such a sweet and surprising revearsal! Who knew that a conversation between a woman and a car could be so compelling - like "Driving Miss Daisy" without the middleman!? Ha! A director would have a wonderful time figuring out how to stage this piece in a compelling way. I particularly enjoyed the ending, which was liberating and mildly ambiguous in the best way!

  • Aly Kantor: Pressure Points

As a school teacher, I've dealt with my fair share of awful administrators... but from the very first page of this tense ten-minute play, I knew we were dealing with something totally new. The discomfort mounts and mounts as the scenario becomes more and more inappropriate, raising the stakes the way you'd boil a frog. The most terrifying aspect is the fact that the scenario is so mundane. These are the kind of comments that women hear every day. Somehow it gets worse when you recognize how much power Donegal holds over the captive administrators. Well done!

  • Aly Kantor: Bereavement Leave

This dark, uncanny play should not be relatable.

I related SO HARD to this play.

Prillaman uses tons of subtle but effective theatrical devices to build the ambiance of your average American workplace. Fans of language and wordplay will have a field day hunting for clues to the nature of the work. I particularly appreciated the doubling in the piece, which was not for budgets or convenience but to show the extent to which everyone is replaceable. Oh, and did I mention it's freaking hilarious?

Put on your casual shirt and get reading! What must be done, must be done!

  • Aly Kantor: Succulents: The Art of Adulting OR Reasons I Am A Terrible Roommate

Come for the delightful, highly motivated, and specific female characters, stay for the brilliant subversion of the Daphne and Apollo myth! The true strength of this play was the way in which it grapples with the concept of "goodness" - from the overall message (what IS an eco-warrior?) to the handling of the Daphne/Apollo plot, where we're forced to grapple with the idea that both are truly victims of circumstance. As a bonus, the underlying romance at the center of the story is squishy and queer and sweet! Everyone is flawed! Everyone is good! A fun, effective ecodrama!

  • Aly Kantor: The Resurrectionists

I was lucky enough to see a virtual reading of this hilarious play - even in the reading format, the hysterical dialogue was the star... and yet I couldn't help but imagine all of the creative possibilities for staging and physical comedy! This dynamic duo (plus the watchman) would be a treat for two comedic players with a knack for timing. At the same time, the play provides food for thought when it comes to questions of morality: could murder ever be... good?! The clever reversal at the end will have audiences laughing until they're post-deceased! Clever fun!

  • Aly Kantor: All Thumbs

This uniquely theatrical comedy would be a treat for a duo of actors! With ten minutes to kill before an on-air interview, a chatty, try-hard applicant coerces a hardened, old school critic into exploring the nuances in the seemingly simple thumbs-up gesture. This play about nuance is full of its own clever nuances, too - particularly a few clever and irreverent laugh lines that brilliantly break the play's patter and would certainly catch attentive audiences off guard! Even after reading and interrogating my own internal critic, I feel comfortable giving this short comedy a thumbs up! Really!

  • Aly Kantor: SLANTED LIGHT

Anyone who has lived through the last 2+ years will find something to relate to in this intimate drama about grief, stagnation, isolation, and the difficulty of facing the unknown. Despite the supernatural elements, we're presented with a naturalistic world full of pathos and gentle humor. It's full of stubborn but lovable characters, so there are so many cathartic moments as we watch them break old patterns and reach for more. Many elements that would be a blast for designers, from poltergeist-esque banging to heavenly light to full on explosions! It's an active story full of reveals...
