Sylia Francis

Living in Ohio while working as a corporate travel agent. Sylia studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, and at Actors Circle Theatre in Los Angeles. A playwright whose voice focuses on black folks, women, relationships, love, marriage, and LGBTQ people. Some of her plays include "Black Face", "The Cruise", "Orange Juice", "The Escort", and "Him and Her" - just to name a few. Part of the Master Class at the Barrow Group Theatre; belongs to the Michigan Playwrights Group. "Black Face" was selected to be read in the ANDTheatre Company’s Eclectic Evening of Shorts XIV: Bytes & Bullets, and the Spring Forward Festival in June of 2021 with the Barrow Group Theatre.

Synopsis

While volunteering for the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Alabama, Maddie, a middle-aged Black woman, is approached by Opie, a middle-aged white man who stops along the roadside to question what she's doing. What begins as a chance encounter between two strangers quickly becomes a revealing conversation about race, memory, and the stories we choose to tell. Assumptions collide, and Maddie must decide...
