Artistic Statement

As a character-based playwright, I unearth what makes people move, breathe, and on occasion dance. How our feelings, our emotions, our passions birth themselves into the physical world through our bodies, our voices, and our spirit. How the space between characters becomes charged, cavernous, or non-existent. And how a world can weigh down, uplift, or ignite the undiscovered parts of who we are.

The worlds of my plays tend toward the sparse, bare-boned, and physically active that can give way to potential dance or choreographic opportunity. Oftentimes my scripts will start out realistic and delve into what mythical spaces can be found beyond or between the cracks. I seek to challenge with puzzles and introspection, to surprise with the cute and awkward, and to engage directly through shared imagination.

Magical realism is what I write. And bringing lesser-known historical people to the stage is my mission.
