Ignatius is a gay man in his early twenties doing a maths DPhil at Oxford University. His devoutly religious psychoanalyst mother, Lady Courtenay, is being haunted by a demon in the form of her father, Mr. Crommenacker. To protect Ignatius from the demonic homosexual influences which Mr. Crommenacker represents, she controls every aspect of his life and treats him like a baby. Ignatius’ scientist father, Sir Reginald, is too much of a workaholic to be bothered with all these problems, which he regards as trivial. When Sir Reginald’s US colleague Ryan, together with wife Ruby and carefree daughter Bettina visit, Bettina challenges Ignatius’ dysfunctional attachment to his mother. This is helped by visiting Polish priest Father Szymon, who is about to leave the priesthood. Lady Courtenay is determined to arrange with the parish priest Father Aloysius a solemn exorcism to vanquish Mr. Crommenacker, but the diocese do not give their permission. As Ignatius’ friendships with Bettina and Father Szymon deepen, Mr. Crommenacker’s influence becomes more powerful and Lady Courtenay becomes ever more desperate. Father Aloysius finally agrees to perform a solemn exorcism, but it fails to vanquish Mr. Crommenacker. Lady Courtenay finally acknowledges the childhood trauma which has made her terrified of male homosexuality, and Mr. Crommenacker finally disappears. Ignatius and Father Szymon decide to move into a flat together and Bettina decides she wants a career as a therapist.
