Dawes masterfully sets up an eclectic group of unique characters whom you get to know well enough without it feeling like exposition is being laid out at any point to give the audience a full picture of the individuals. The characters are great antitheses of each other, but like any good character pairings, they are also more a like than they care to acknowledge, and that
acknowledgement is part of the journey. The results are hilarious and full of heart!

Enjoyed a virtual reading of Teen Dad with Inkwell Theater and found that once again Dawes showcases her talent to write dynamic, extremely developed characters with complex stories that are well balanced with humor. This family drama is a refreshing tale for the stage with characters any actor would find exciting to play.

Teen Dad is a hilarious, mul-tee-faceted, confrontational and big hearted play that felt like being witness to a noise rock family trauma dramedy concept album played in real time! The interactions between characters felt grounded like a bass line, the dialogue was sharp in directness like a guitar string being shredded off, and it had a pace that ricocheted like a cymbal but was also steady like a drum beat. Read this!

This play was such a breath of fresh air for me. The characters are REAL people: complex, unexpected, and hopelessly flawed. But they are also full of love and humanity; they reminded me of so many people I know. Definitely give it a read.

I love this play! I love that it is hilarious, human, and poignant in alternating turns. I love the supremely distinct, complex characters. I love Abby's journey and the straightforward and provocative conversations she has with the adults in her life. I love the fever pitch at the end of the first act, and then the contemplative tempo shift that provokes a deeper understanding of Tanya and Tom as we journey back in time. Dawes examines a lot that resonates with my upbringing and search for identity as a multi-racial teen, and I'm grateful to see it represented.

TEEN DAD oscillates between hilarious and heart-wrenching and is sometimes both at the same time. In this play I felt my family represented on stage, but even if you're not mul-tee-racial or the child of teen parents, this play is worth reading and seeing because you can't help but root for these flawed yet lovable characters. I sincerely hope that I have the opportunity to see a full production of this play soon. Every theatre should consider producing it in their upcoming season.

Dawes gives us realness, honesty and family dysfunction in Teen Dad. I felt for each of the characters and wanted each of them to succeed on their individual quest. This piece is funny, heartfelt and diffidently something you should be producing in your .theatre

A dysfunctional and completely broken, yet absolutely relatable family is thoroughly exposed, to each other, the neighbors, and the audience. Dawes presents these multifaceted characters in a way that is uniquely suited for the stage.

One of those rare plays that does something important formally while also depicting deep, complex, vivid characters. Their struggles to enter the setting -- which theatergoers will know all too well -- speaks volumes, and their journey to making the setting their own is impactful. Actors and directors should be reading this play ASAP.

A darkly comic vision of a family moving toward healing. Hurtling actually. From the tense and racially charged opening through an explosion of violence to the revelation of painful histories, this play grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go.
