  • Kate Danley: A First-Draft Second-Rate Love Story

It's a play-within-a-play! It's a screwball comedy! It's a farce! It's all these things, but most of all, it is flippin' hysterical. As actors cold read from the wrong drafts of a play in development, this quick little piece avalanches into the funny. I would love to see this performed onstage! What a treat!

Ah the many pitfalls of new script development! These are plumbed to hilarious effect in this effervescent comedy by John Busser. There's certainly some inside baseball being played, but the humor in this work would also be accessible to a general audience. And this play deserves to be seen by many audiences!

Clever funny play and all too-true. Actors working off of different drafts -- sure happened to me. More than once. :)

Since I've already watched all the precious episodes of "Slings and Arrows" twice through, this hilarious comedy from Busser is a good fix. I love inside-track winking theatre escapism, the knowing commiseration that is really not about the genre or art form, but about people, and the way they will universally trip themselves up, or knowingly or inadvertently, sabotage the team. Busser's nutty play would be a perfect kick-off for a short play festival, and for this theatre-starved weirdo, this is balm for the soul.

Cleverly witty play about actors in a staged reading all having different drafts. Theatre professionals especially will find it all too real!

A clever send-up on what will be all too familiar to playwrights and actors, that is the foibles of putting a play together with prima donna actors and a script that keeps changing without the cast being all up to speed on it.

Such a fun, quick, witty piece that covers the woes and wonders of script development. LOVE STORY felt like reading a play of inside jokes for theatre people, which I absolutely loved. It would be such a great addition to short play festivals, especially to open the night.

I'm a not-so-secret fan of door-slamming plays, farces, "Noises Off," "Present Laughter" type plays and "First-Draft Second-Rate Love Story" fits into that family nicely. A ridiculous inner story surrounded by an equally funny outer shell of a story. And all packed into 10 minutes. Good job.

Busser’s “A First-Draft Second-Rate Love Story” is not only hilarious, it gives companies artistic freedoms; if this is chosen for production, Busser leaves gaps for the actors and director to fill in themselves, which is why I find it unique. As someone said here, its like Saturday Night Live parodying itself. A very fun ten minutes of theatre, with low production costs!

Hahahaha! I laughed out loud while reading this hilarious piece that depicts the trials of a play reading in development. Fast paced and witty, I agree with another reviewer and wished I had written it first. So much fun.
