  • Ken Green: A First-Draft Second-Rate Love Story

I'm a not-so-secret fan of door-slamming plays, farces, "Noises Off," "Present Laughter" type plays and "First-Draft Second-Rate Love Story" fits into that family nicely. A ridiculous inner story surrounded by an equally funny outer shell of a story. And all packed into 10 minutes. Good job.

Busser’s “A First-Draft Second-Rate Love Story” is not only hilarious, it gives companies artistic freedoms; if this is chosen for production, Busser leaves gaps for the actors and director to fill in themselves, which is why I find it unique. As someone said here, its like Saturday Night Live parodying itself. A very fun ten minutes of theatre, with low production costs!

Hahahaha! I laughed out loud while reading this hilarious piece that depicts the trials of a play reading in development. Fast paced and witty, I agree with another reviewer and wished I had written it first. So much fun.

Imagine Saturday Night Live doing a campy parody of Saturday Night Live. This was a fun piece that makes lite of itself. The absurdity of it all is / was that it’s all so true and very real. One of those works where you say, “Damn! I wish I had done that first.”

Saw this in performance at Cleveland Public Theatre, and it is simply hilarious. Busser tweaks the collective nose of his fellow playwrights with this witty, crafty account of staging a new work and how we bravely push through it, no matter what. (In the spirit of full disclosure I have myself held a reading of a new work and provided the wrong draft ... twice.)
