  • Morey Norkin: Veterans of Community Theatre

Painfully funny! I say “painfully” because I feel like I know these characters or maybe I’m one of them! Did I tell you about one of the times I played… don’t get me started! Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn has hilariously captured the egos that abound in community theater and the challenge of fitting in. If you’ve ever done community theater, you need to read this!

Walking into a new community theatre is daunting at the best of times. But when you are just looking to meet hot girls then the Veterans of Community Theatre maybe isn't for you! Jacquelyn has created a wonderfully animated group of characters in the Veterans and then unleashed them on a poor newbie. From there the chaos ensues (as only it can in the theatre world!) This is another example of Jacquelyn's wonderful ability to bring various worlds to life!

I was reminded of so many onstage pranks and eccentric actors from my own days in community theatre while reading Jacquie Floyd-Priskorn’s very funny play, which I found to be a “true delight”! I know so many actors who would relish chewing the scenery and getting huge laughs, if they could keep a straight face themselves! I would love to see this with some intentionally over-the-top scenery and costumes.

Every community theatre devotee will cringe like crazy reading this hilarious send-up of "that" theatre troupe. Witty, all too self-aware, and fast, with characters that would be a ball to play.

Bwahahaha! What a treat. If you miss in-person theatre (who doesn't?) and need a laugh (we all do) then check out this delightful send up of Community Theatre and all its internal dramas and travails. The characters and concept in Floyd-Priskorn's wonderful play seem pulled from real life, universally relatable, and funny as heck. I think this would work on Zoom, too! It's great fun.

Ah the fond memories this conjures up. Jacquie Floyd-Priskorn knows of what she speaks here, from actors who tell tales to actors who tell tales badly. This is a love letter to that place most of us started, whether as actors or writers. I think what I like most is that she could have been more caustic in her skewering, but instead, gently teases us (and her characters) with this play. A charmer for audiences and actors alike.

Too funny. Sending up all the tropes of community theatre in a laugh-filled play. This little gem should keep audiences entertained.

It's clear Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn loves community theatre actors. She knows they're daffy, over-the-top, (more than) a bit self-centered and self-aggrandizing, as well as passionate.

"Veterans of Community Theatre" is 99 percent love letter, 1 percent poison pen letter to those of us with theatre in our hearts.

For those of us who've lived, breathed, and dined on Community Theatre, the archetypes are ripe for satire, and Jacuelyn Floyd-Priskorn skewers them all – delightfully and lovingly – in this funny send up of a support group of non-professional performers who are in the trenches, surviving the wars being played out weekly in church basements, community halls, or basically anywhere there's a stage, a few lights, and dreams of glory.

Hilarious, fast, and funny, who hasn't met people like this?? Community theater people are a unique breed unto themselves, and are immediately recognizable and lovingly spoofed in this hilarious short play. The jokes fly fast, and the end is a delight. Check it out!
