  • Benjamin Peel: THE BEAUTY OF A ROSE

An intelligent short play that examines what it means to be human. I was put in mind of Douglas Adams' Deep Thought super computer which when asked to compute the meaning of life came up with the answer of 42 such is the absurdity of trying to get AI to analyse and replicate the multitude of factors that make up the glorious messiness of our existence. This thought provoking play reinforces that illogical humanity wins out.

Jack Levin’s “The Beauty of a Rose” is a thoughtful sci-fi piece that questions the essence of humanity. It’s the kind of play you think about long after reading it.

  • Dan Taube: THE BEAUTY OF A ROSE

I really enjoyed this play. Very philosophical in nature. It wrestles with big ideas, not the least of which is the survival of the human race. My mind was engaged the whole time. Fantastic writing and story-telling!

I had the great pleasure of reading this piece as part of a weekly play reading and not only was it brilliantly written, it was also very thought provoking. The idea that humanity (which has become increasingly dependent on technology) doesn't want it making all our decisions. It asks the ultimate question of do we really believe our lives will remain ours to decide? A fabulous and poingant play. So very well done.

  • George Sapio: THE BEAUTY OF A ROSE

I just had the honor of being a part of a reading of this thoughtful work, and loved it. There's so much here to think about: humanity and efficiency. Should we let the machines dictate our logical society--which eliminates our humanity? Much to discuss, much to think about, and fun roles for all the actors!

  • Rand Higbee: THE BEAUTY OF A ROSE

I was drawn to this play because some of the plays I write myself are rather sci-fi in nature. Jack Levine didn't let me down. He has written a quick but thought provoking little gem here that I can almost hear Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy arguing over. Read for yourself! It's fast!

I had the pleasure of hearing a recent reading of this engrossing short play, an unusual look at artificial intelligence with a wonderfully surprising twist. Lots of food for thought here. Well done!

  • Steven G. Martin: THE BEAUTY OF A ROSE

This is satisfying short science fiction.

Jack Levine may include a twist in this 10-minute drama, but that isn't what the story is about. Instead, the twist serves to tell part of the story, to reflect upon the theme of "The Beauty of a Rose."

    Nicely written.

An entertaining and thought-provoking look at the value of humanity.

  • Doug DeVita: THE BEAUTY OF A ROSE

A fascinating sci-fi piece in which Jack Levine weighs the pros and cons of super computing and the future of humanity. What is gained? What is lost? All things to ponder as we race to refine the AI experience, and presented with surgical precision by Levine as he builds his arguments with simmering tension, and then blows it all up with a knockout twist at the end. Fun, but sobering, stuff.
