Recommendations of Heist!

  • Rachel Feeny-Williams: Heist!

Oh that was just what I needed! Lisa and the pair of bumbling thieves she has created offer wonderful laugh out loud moments as they try to succeed in stealing a diamond, not really knowing the history behind it. The chaotic back and forth between the two thieves as well as their interaction with the unseen characters they address is brilliantly done and would offer two performers the chance to execute a wonderfully timed farcical piece that is sure to have an audience laughing out loud.

You've heard of organized crime. Heck, they even made a spin-off of the "Law & Order" franchise for it and brought back Det. Stabler. Well, this could be the next one: "Law & Order: STU - Stupid Thieves Unit." This pair makes the Three Stooges look like a Mensa meeting at the home of Laurel & Hardy. No diamonds were harmed in the making of this play, but you may laugh too loud at work (like I did) when you read it.

You ever get a sinking sensation in your chest when absolutely everything that should have gone right, goes wrong? Billy and Gene must feel a similar sensation thanks to everything Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend puts them through in "Heist!"

One of the neatest parts of this very funny comedy is that an audience feels sympathy for Billy and Gene. They're thieves, yes, but in a "Hey buddy, I've come up with a get-rich-quick scheme that'll have us on Easy Street" way. And their complete unpreparedness -- and moments of kind humanity -- is touching.

  • Pamela Morgan: Heist!

Heist! Is truly a laugh out loud page turner, while two very inexperienced thieves attempt to steal the Hope Diamond. Feriend does an incredible job of writing off stage (and unheard) characters that keeps the constant flow of plot and laughs going. I hope to have an opportunity to see this staged! Duh, Marianne!

Luckily for us, Gene Wilder and Billy the Kid haven't really thought through their attempt to steal the Hope Diamond. The collapse of their hair-brained plan is the source of the many, many laughs that fill Heist! There are unseen and unheard others who are vividly rendered, but wisely the focus remains on our bumbling protagonists. The Hope Diamond has probably never been safer.

  • Tom Moran: Heist!

Feriend keeps the one-liners zipping along in this frenetic two-hander. She wisely leaves all of the other characters assumed, which makes this an easy play to stage and also wrings a lot of laughs from the two actual characters continually reacting to the unseen/unheard. Lots of fun to read and would be just as entertaining on stage.

There’s a writing rule of thumb: show your characters at the top of their game encountering circumstances they need their skills to overcome. Notice “at the top of their game” does not necessarily imply “good at what they do,” just that they’re doing their best with that they have.

Feriend gives us two lovable idiots who really are trying. Oh how they try! They have a plan, they adapt to circumstances, and it’s all just bad!!!

Fortunately, Marianne the docent is there! Not fortunate for them but for us. She’s the best unseen hero/antagonist ever!

  • Christopher Plumridge: Heist!

Ha! I love these two bumbling buffoons! This would be so much fun to stage and to watch, as we witness Gene and Billy the Kid try to steel the Hope Diamond from the Smithsonian. Lisa cleverly introduces us to a character who remains unseen, but has a real presence in the play. This is a hilarious, fast paced comedy which children will love to be in the audience for, and adults will love it too. Very funny!

A gut-busting comedy for all ages. A privilege for audiences yet to experience! Witty and farcical; the true treasure is the constant flow of fun and humor, and the moronic chemistry between the robbers is the real crown jewel.
