This well-crafted short play packs a big punch. Who doesn’t hate shopping for Valentine’s Day cards? Two likeable, intelligent young people share their thoughts on love, bad writing, and Gertrude Stein. The dialogue is witty and well-conceived, and I would love to see this staged. Bravo!

Sweet and salty! A witty love note to meet cutes that’ll be a delightful addition to festivals. When strangers Jill and Curt cringe over cheesy Valentine’s Day cards in a store, the two grounded but isolated souls make a hopeful connection. TO LOVE ALONE left me cheering them on and wanting more.

  • William Triplett: To Love Alone

A charming, whimsical, and very poignant two-hander here full of subtext about loneliness and disappointments of the heart. I found myself smiling at the repartee and the skewering of a manufactured holiday, but I also felt sympathy for the two nicely etched characters and their respective senses of isolation. This really should be part of any Valentine's Day themed festival, but it can also stand on its own as a story of two people looking for a connection. Well done!

I dislike Valentine's Day about as much as these two and I totally want them to get together and trade intelligent quips and quotes all evening. A fun short meet cute for a February festival, or any time of the year.

  • Scott Sickles: To Love Alone

Like a rich chocolate bonbon with a salty nut center, this is a perfect confection of cynicism and romance.

Martineau criticizes (or has his characters criticize) the oft-complained-about abject commercialism and bad greeting card pseudopoetry of V-Day through fresh, fun banter between two beautifully grounded characters. One might wish you knew these people or maybe even were these people.

A Valentine’s gift for actors and festivals, holiday-themed or otherwise.

A cute two hander that puts two strangers together in a situation where they can quickly strike up a conversation over cheesy Valentine's Day cards and the ending leaves it intriguingly open. A delightful short play.

Short and sweet. Andrew Martineau's TO LOVE ALONE is a great two-hander that puts the cute in "meet cute". Just like a Valentine's Day box of chocolates... it left me wanting more!

It's true, most valentines day cards are cheesy in their messages and expensive for what they are. Jill and Curt quickly agree this in this cute meet and their dialogue flows effortlessly and fluidly. Is it possible they might be falling in love....? But hold on, aren't they buying valentines cards for other lovers....hmmm?
Read this play to find out. Very good.

Jill and Curt say what everyone else is thinking when buying Valentine's Day cards. Maybe they should write their own...
I didn't expect a play about buying silly cards to be so deep, but it is. In an aisle full of half-hearted meaning, Martineau gives us poignant dialogue with just the right amount of philosophical pondering. TO LOVE ALONE is light and sweet and leaves us wondering if there might be a happy ending around the corner. Please, someone produce this play!!!

This is a super fun two hander with great dialogue and truth telling. And at the end, we hope he calls her. They'd have fun together.
