  • William Reymann: everyone in new york is beautiful

Refreshing, funny play that undercuts discourse with a beautiful ode to youth, love, and figuring it out in this weird, fucked up world. Smart, heartfelt and humorous, holds a much-needed space for change, time, trial and error, and doubt.

An anthropological and incisive look at New York subculture of the 2020s. The characters are written with a specificity and complexity that make them feel wholly authentic. Christian brilliantly examines the ways in which idealist 20-somethings entangle politics, identity, and morality to justify and explain their actions and impulses. They also break brilliant new ground by digging into the setting - this is a definitive play of this era, grounded to this moment. It felt special getting to see it right now while many of its themes and ideas are still being worked out in real life.

  • Paul Donnelly: everyone in new york is beautiful

These complex people dealing with evolving identity and relationships and sexuality are incisively rendered and leap off the page. I felt submerged in a specific and vividly depicted world. Politics and philosophy have weaponized roles. Flynn has a unique and compelling voice that grips and challenges the reader.

Reading this play feels like eavesdropping on the next table at a vegan restaurant selling $15 mocktails in Brooklyn. Christian Flynn takes a group of people that could easily be insufferable to watch for 90 minutes and makes your heart break for them over and over again. You want the best for each of them, despite their faults. We know these characters, either because we are them or because we’ve loved them. Flynn is a voice to watch, if this play is any indication. They masterfully capture the truth and specificity of being alive in this fucked up world.

Christian Flynn's writing is something you will be unfathomably lucky to encounter in your lifetime. They are an absolute powerhouse, crafting a cinematic yet intimate experience, bringing you closer than you have ever been to those around you as you experience this together, while also being the drop that overflows - putting language to those funny feelings we just push back down, something you haven't been able to admit to anyone else yet. Days later, I'm still asking if the tears I shed are for myself, who I was, or who I hope to be?

Flynn nails 20-something Brooklyn. This is an amazing piece of work. The characters are exceptionally well drawn-- from the archetypes to the incredibly vivid descriptions to the overwhelming subtext of age-and-stage angst (complete with casual vulgarity). The writing is electric. The dialogue, dense. And there's a mother of a monologue that few will have the courage to use in audition. The last scene will break your heart - right before it melts it. This 2024 O'Neill semi-finalist is well worth your time.

  • Leah Plante-Wiener: everyone in new york is beautiful

Sharp, mean, sizzling, but ultimately comforting in its shit-that’s-so-me familiarity, Everyone in New York is Beautiful is a biting reminder that we’re all a little more scared than we give each other credit for. Flynn has a gift for weaving together unique characters with intimately recognizable idiosyncrasies (the edgy leftist podcaster flailing for attention, the ex-Christian desperate for a new identity, the aimless intern) while still surprising us with the ways in which they hurt each other and themselves. I’m in need of more twentysomething living room plays like this.

A delightful play with damn good dialogue. It's a great reminder that sometime all you need to make good theatre is complicated characters talking to each other. A smart look at queerness and polyamory.

This is really great writing. It's dirty, hilarious, and it's centered squarely on character and place. Incisive and full of vitriol. Wonderful.
